End of Year Ceremony

Hello!
Just in case some of you missed it, there is a End-of-the-Year Ceremony on Friday on the school grounds.
It begins at around 11:00 and parents are welcome to come and observe but space is very limited.  The kids will be singing while looking back on a successful year and looking ahead with anticipation of the upcoming school year.
Ice cream will be served afterward and parents are welcome to pick up there child from their designated area afterward.  Buses will be running as well.
I hope that helps.  Please let us know if there are any questions.

Things to know about the last few days

Greetings,Families!

We hope many of you had the chance to connect at the All School Picnic Friday night.

Here's what to expect and here are a few requests for the last week:

  1. Please have your child bring 2-3 books or activities to enjoy for the remainder of the week. We have had to pack up most of our books in the classroom :( so it would be wonderful if your child could bring in a couple of books to read during our silent reading time in the afternoon.
  2. Como Pool on Wednesday! Please help your child remember to bring the following: backpack, walking shoes, swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, packed lunch, and water bottle. They may also bring goggles or a life jacket (they will also supply life jackets at the pool). Please do not send pool toys or money.
  3. Clean up day on Thursday. The children will be helping with clean up around the room and they will be bringing home all of their work on Thursday. If you can, please send in an extra bag or backpack, just in case.  We will be spending the afternoon at the park on this day.
  4. Noon Dismissal on Friday! Can you believe this is only 3 days away!? Please do not send a backpack or lunch on this day. They will be dismissed right from the ceremony.  The children will be gathering and dismissed from a designated spot (in our recess area), after the ceremony, so please come and pick up your child from this area if you are joining us for the ceremony.
Wishing you all the best and more,

A couple of things

Hello!
As we approach the final week of the year, both Erik and were wondering who had volunteered to look after our beloved classroom pet, Gex.  We didn't keep a record of which family had volunteered to care for him over the summer.  Could you email us separately to remind us?  Thank you!
Also, reminder to have your student dressed in their swim suits and appropriate outerwear (along with sunscreen) on Wednesday for our trip to the Como Pool!
Thank you all!

Minnesota River Classroom Newsletter

Minnesota River Families,

The last weeks are upon us!  Looking ahead we have a busy schedule coming! it will be somewhat unsual as we all will be trying to pack up our rooms while the students are present.  The students will mostly be working on finishing lesson work from the last few weeks with additional choice work and interest studies.

On Thursday, 5/31 all Lower Elementary students will be participating in Field Day with the Adolecents.  This means they should bring athletic shoes and dress for outdoor activites (sunscreen if necessary).

On Wednesday, 6/6 the students will be going to the Como Pool.  Please return your permission slip if you have not already.  Please have your student dressed in their swimsuits prior to coming to school along with the appropriate outer clothing.

Water bottles are still very necessary for the remaining of the school year.  Please make sure that your student has one with them while at school.

Thank you all for such a wonderful year!

All the best!

Minnesota River News Letter

Hello Minnesota River Families,

What great workshare afternoons!  It was so rewarding seeing the excitement of the students as they vigorously prepared work for presenting!  Thank you parents for taking time to come in and work with your students!

Unfortunately, Erik has been out sick since Wednesday this week.  We all wish him a speedy recovery as we look forward to seeing him again next week.  I do not have work updates for you but would instead encourage you to begin a conversation with your student to get updated on the work they have been doing at school.

With the change in the weather it is very important that your student bring a waterbottle with them to school each day.  Also, a reminder that we go to the park on Wednesdays, so sunscreen would be a good idea as well (they will have to be able to apply it themselves).

A reminder to look at the snack schedule for your family's week to bring snack for the classroom.

Finally, the first years will be walking to the Como Zoo on Friday, May 25th to extend their study of vertebrates.  Please make sure that they have good walking shoes, sunscreen (or other arrangements for sun protection), a waterbottle and a lunch.  Please adjust as weather dictates.

Thank you all!

Minnesota Classroom Newsletter

Hello Wonderful Parents,

What a great turn of events with the weather!  So surreal to live in this great state--one week 18" of snow, 60 degree weather the next.  The students have been getting outside and enjoying the sunshine and they seem so much more relaxed! They have been busy in the classroom with many interest projects and follow up work--we were even treated to a song presentation from the Broadway play Hamilton!

MCA tests are finally over and the results will be available soon.  We are proud of the effort out in by our third-year students!

The students are looking forward to Spirit week, May 7th-11th.  Participation is not required, but should you choose to participate, here is the line up.  Monday: PJ Day, Tuesday: Rainbow Day, Wednesday: Wackey Wednesday, Thursday: Book Character, Friday: Formal Friday.

Field Trip!
First year parents, if you are interested in chaperoning a trip to the Como Zoo on Friday, May 25th, please reply!  The first years will be going on a walk to the zoo, to visit and go on a vertebrate scavenger hunt.  Let me know if you are available that day from 9:00 to 1:30.  It would be great to have you along!

Here are the works that the students are currently doing:

First Years: Individual Math, Writing Command Cards, BC/AD Timeline, Vertebrate Characteristics (Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds)

Second Years: Triangles by Sides, Addition Stories, Continuing Continent Booklets and Vital Functions of Vertebrates, Cnidaria and Annelids

Third Years: Parts of Speech Sentence Strips, Invertebrate and Vertebrate Classification, Money Amounts and Change, Ongoing Ancient Civilization research

If you have the means to donate, our classroom has need for large erasers and Elmer's glue.  We appreciate all the donations and volunteering you have given us.  We could not do this without all of you.  Thank you!!

Dear Minnesota River Families,

Its been an active week back from break.  The students are starting to get back into the routine of being at school.  Many of them have picked up their work where they left off and others are beginning new projects.
MCA tests for reading are finished and results will be avialble shorty.  Math tests are coming in the next few weeks and the results will be shared shortly after. Regardless of the results, we are so proud of the improvement the third years have shown from the begining of the year!
As we approach the end of the year, be sure to look for updated information regarding changes in the schedule and special events.
The lesson plan for the next week is as follows:

First Years: Verb Command Game, Individualized Math, Geometric Solid Mystery Bag, National Anthems and Flag, BC/AD Timeline
Second Years: Haiku, Individualized Math, Triangles by Sides, Timeline of Life
Third Years: Interjections, Money Amounts, Parts of a Regular Polygon, Study of a Nation Maps, Ancient Civilizations Research Check-in

If you have the means and the desire to donate a few items to the classroom, we have the following needs: GLUE STICKS (this is a big need!), staples, colored pencils, a small dustpan and brush, scoth tape, lined paper,

Thank you all and please hope for better weather soon!

Minnesota Newsletter

Dear Minnesota River Families,

Welcome to spring break!  The students in the Minnesota classroom are finishing the week by trying to complete outstanding work, working on new practical life activities and enjoying time outside!
We are anxiously awaiting warmer weather but in the meantime, please make sure that your student has the proper clothing for outdoor actvities.  When snow is present or when the temperature is below freezing, the students will be asked to where snowpants.

Over the last few weeks the first years have working on phonograms, reading comprehension recently learned about the verb.  The have been introduced to the stamp game for addition and are finishing their study of the sensorial exploration of shapes.  For geography the first years got to learn all about the American flag (along with getting to see a "real" flag).  This lead them into a study of how color is used to represent different ideas and concepts in various world flags. Finally, for biology the students are learning about how vertebrates are grouped into different groups depending on their characteristics.

Second years have continued to work with pronouns and adverbs while working independently on their math.  For geometry, they have been learning about the relationship between angles and fractions and how to add, subtract, multiply and divide them.  The second years are continuing their detailed continent studies with South America and Europe and for biology they are working in small groups to study the vital functions of vertebrates.

Third years are solifiying their knowledge of the verb, preposition and adverb while working on their own idependent math activities.  For geometry, they are finishing their study of quadrilaterals by studying the parts of various shapes.  For biology and history they are finishing their work on plant classification and beginning their studies of ancient civilizations.

We have some small needs for the classroom if you have the means to help out.  We are out of vinegar for cleaning and the students have been sewing again and are in need of felt in a variety of colors.

Thank you and have a restful and joyful break!

MN River Newsletter, March 9, 2108

Greetings Minnesota River Families,

We wish you happy and meaningful days as the season swings toward the light.  At school we have had beautiful sunny days through our south windows, and warmth and calm in our work and play together.  There is some work that has really pulled the students in, especially geography map work and ongoing engagement with flags.  As always it is an honor to witness.

Thank you to those of you who contributed consumable materials to the classroom over the past weeks, and particularly to those of you who have worked so hard to provide us with wonderful snacks.  All of us appreciate it very much.

These are the academic lessons given in the past two weeks:  The first years are learning about articles and phonograms while the second and third years are studying prepositions, verbs and contractions.  In geometry, the students continue to work on their particular areas of study: sensorial exploration of shapes, measuring angles and quadrilaterals.  The first years have started an exciting unit on the parts and history of flags.  Second years have started their detailed study of the continents and the third years have begun their cumulative work on Study of a the USA.  Biology and history have presented the students with a variety of topics, including reading the clock, studying the early formation of the earth and ancient civilizations.  The first years have been learning about the parts of leaves, second years have been looking at the vital functions of vertebrates and third years have begun their study of the classification of plants.

Our best to you all!

Minnesota River News Letter

Greetings MN River Families!

We had a great week this week, with a lot of calm and good work.  It's amazing how calm things can get with 11 children gone with the flu!  It's been a hard week that way, with both Patrick and I also succumbing for a brief time.  To all of you who took care of sick children this week, we offer you our appreciation.  We know it's been a rough time for health!

One development this week is our initial work on the MCA math testing, for the third years.  For this event, we spend a time reviewing old knowledge and looking at some new skills, to prepare for the test.  The results of the test (i.e. "how the children score") is not important to us necessarily, but we want to help them feel confident about taking it.  We are well aware that these tests do not indicate the progress of the whole child, and this whole child is whom we educate at Great River.  The test is a very narrow window on who the child is, and even that window is distorted by the medium by which the data is gathered.

Nevertheless, we do some preparation, and we encourage the children to work their hardest and do their best on the test.  Placing pressure on them to do well would only result in anxiety.  If they ask you about it, please do not make it a big deal.  Perhaps ask them how they feel about it, and discuss whatever feelings they have.  The most important thing is for them not to feel that the results of the test will reflect who they are as a person.  The results will certainly not!

Please let us know if you have any further questions about the test.  The reading test will be given on March 5, with the math to follow later on.  I'll let you know when I have that information.

Here are academic lessons from the past few weeks:  The students are finishing their poetry unit with some impressive work and have begun a new unit on the function of words.  Math is still an individualized curriculum so please ask your student what they have been working on lately.  First years continue their sensorial exploration of geometric shapes while the second years are learning more about angles and transverals.  Third years have begun their study on the seven quadrilaterals of reality.  The first years have finished their maps of the USA!  What a great work! Second years are finishing their biome unit and third years are working with a new pin-map material of North America.  For the other areas of cultural science, the first years continue to study how the year is organized into parts and the second years will be studying the fundamental needs of a foreign culture while the third years are intensely studying the timeline of humans!  All the students continue their botany studies and will be moving to zoology in the coming weeks.

Lastly, a request.  If anyone could pick up paper napkins, paper plates, paper towels, and / or kleenex over the weekend, it would be extremely helpful.

Thank you so much!

Greetings elementary families!

I'm writing to let you know about a food assistance program called Sheridan Story that we will  begin partnering with in March.  Sheridan Story sends food home with families on Friday afternoons so that families have enough food over the weekend.  I have worked with this program in the past and appreciate how they respect confidentiality and provide quality food.  If you are interested in participating, read on!

In your children's backpacks this week you will find a lime green half sheet that describes the meals that Sheridan Story can provide.  On the other side is a registration form that you can sign and return to school in order to sign up.  No other documentation is needed.  Please return this form to me or your child's guide.

We hope to be able to sign up all families that are interested.

Sheridan Story will begin providing food in mid-March.  On the day of the delivery food will be placed in your child's backpack to come home at the end of the day.

You are welcome to contact me with any questions either by email (serdmann@greatriverschool.org) or by phone (651-305-2780 x36).  Thank you!

Best,
Saleha Erdmann

Regarding February 14

Hello MN River Families!

On February 14, we will not be doing any giving or receiving of Valentines, nor (as on any other day) will candy be allowed at school.  We will be doing craft activities in the afternoon, and perhaps a bit of storytelling, to explore the meaning of the people and things that we love in the world.

Thank you!

Erik and Patrick
