Minnesota Newsletter

Dear Minnesota River Families,

Welcome to spring break!  The students in the Minnesota classroom are finishing the week by trying to complete outstanding work, working on new practical life activities and enjoying time outside!
We are anxiously awaiting warmer weather but in the meantime, please make sure that your student has the proper clothing for outdoor actvities.  When snow is present or when the temperature is below freezing, the students will be asked to where snowpants.

Over the last few weeks the first years have working on phonograms, reading comprehension recently learned about the verb.  The have been introduced to the stamp game for addition and are finishing their study of the sensorial exploration of shapes.  For geography the first years got to learn all about the American flag (along with getting to see a "real" flag).  This lead them into a study of how color is used to represent different ideas and concepts in various world flags. Finally, for biology the students are learning about how vertebrates are grouped into different groups depending on their characteristics.

Second years have continued to work with pronouns and adverbs while working independently on their math.  For geometry, they have been learning about the relationship between angles and fractions and how to add, subtract, multiply and divide them.  The second years are continuing their detailed continent studies with South America and Europe and for biology they are working in small groups to study the vital functions of vertebrates.

Third years are solifiying their knowledge of the verb, preposition and adverb while working on their own idependent math activities.  For geometry, they are finishing their study of quadrilaterals by studying the parts of various shapes.  For biology and history they are finishing their work on plant classification and beginning their studies of ancient civilizations.

We have some small needs for the classroom if you have the means to help out.  We are out of vinegar for cleaning and the students have been sewing again and are in need of felt in a variety of colors.

Thank you and have a restful and joyful break!

Re: Not about our lockdown drill yesterday

Please excuse the typo!  The subject line should read "Note about our lockdown drill yesterday."  My apologies for the error!

Dear MN River Families,

On Tuesday afternoon, we had a school-wide lockdown drill with intruder where we practiced gathering in a hidden corner of the classroom with the doors locked.  Shortly before the drill, we had a discussion with the children about what this would look like and why we practice this type of drill. Basically, we let the children know that the guides' most important job is to keep all of them safe, and that practicing this type of drill allows us to make sure we have done all we can.  We wanted to let you know of this drill since it might bring up further questions at home, but also so you could even take the opportunity to have an intentional conversation with your child about this unfortunate reality (if you feel that would be appropriate). Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Best wishes,

MN River Newsletter, March 9, 2108

Greetings Minnesota River Families,

We wish you happy and meaningful days as the season swings toward the light.  At school we have had beautiful sunny days through our south windows, and warmth and calm in our work and play together.  There is some work that has really pulled the students in, especially geography map work and ongoing engagement with flags.  As always it is an honor to witness.

Thank you to those of you who contributed consumable materials to the classroom over the past weeks, and particularly to those of you who have worked so hard to provide us with wonderful snacks.  All of us appreciate it very much.

These are the academic lessons given in the past two weeks:  The first years are learning about articles and phonograms while the second and third years are studying prepositions, verbs and contractions.  In geometry, the students continue to work on their particular areas of study: sensorial exploration of shapes, measuring angles and quadrilaterals.  The first years have started an exciting unit on the parts and history of flags.  Second years have started their detailed study of the continents and the third years have begun their cumulative work on Study of a the USA.  Biology and history have presented the students with a variety of topics, including reading the clock, studying the early formation of the earth and ancient civilizations.  The first years have been learning about the parts of leaves, second years have been looking at the vital functions of vertebrates and third years have begun their study of the classification of plants.

Our best to you all!

In Partnership,
Erik and Patrick
